The US military laid siege to the Syrian city of Raqqa in June 2017 in a criminal operation that US Defense Secretary James “Mad Dog” Mattis labelled a “War of annihilation.” The indiscriminate shelling and bombing campaign was described by Amnest International as a war crime.
In April, 2017, the Trump administration utilized unsubstantiated allegations of a chemical weapons attack by the Assad government, later disproven by journalist Seymour Hersch, to launch cruise missile strikes on Syrian government airfields.
The Obama administration's campaign against Syria focused increasingly on allegations that the Assad regime was using chemical weapons against its own people, presented without evidence or even any effort to explain why—in view of the lack of any military benefit—the regime would do so.
